Quick disclaimer before this “breaking News” gets weird: City of Shallotte, NC is a satire page, not the actual town government. Just a wildly entertaining one that apparently has nothing better to do than start beef with a cartoon sun. We love them for it.
We were still mid-celebration — we had just hit our $1,000 goal for the Stop Summer Hunger Food Drive, thanks to Jim Roberts and the Network for Entrepreneurs in Wilmington riding in like the heroes they are — when something extraordinary happened.
An official notice arrived.
The Incident
Sunny 103.7 had quietly reached out to City of Shallotte, NC — a Facebook satire page boasting 11,000+ followers and a flair for absurdist mock-bureaucracy — to ask if they’d be willing to “harness the power of chaos for a good cause.”
Their response was a full “Official Notice of Civic Audit,” declaring a Mandatory Voluntary Contribution Act and ordering their followers to fund our food drive. The stated reason: to “prove a point to a cartoon sun wearing sunglasses.”
Their words. Not ours.
They tagged the actual Town of Shallotte, the City of Wilmington, and the satirical Shallotte Department of Importance for maximum comedic reach. It was, objectively, a masterpiece of local internet governance.
Challenge Accepted
We accepted publicly and raised the food drive goal to $1,500 — because if a rival sun-based entity’s chaos reserves are being deployed on our behalf, we should probably make it worth their while.
We widened the call to action by tagging WECT News, Visit Wilmington NC and Beaches, and the Wilmington NC Fire Department to spread the word.
The Shallotte Update
The City of Shallotte’s post has since collected 40 reactions, 11 comments, and 6 shares. It’s a very impressive show of support from the Shallotte Empire.
Donations from Shallotte: $0.
The Department of Civic Audits has issued many decrees. The Department of Actually Clicking the Donate Button appears to still be on lunch break. We’re sure they’ll be back any moment now.
We do, genuinely, love them. The comments have been delightful — including debate about whether the Shallotte Empire recruits allies via casseroles instead of Death Star labor (a solid strategy, frankly). The two pages have maintained a dignified, professional diplomatic back-and-forth throughout this crisis.
The Part That Actually Matters
Behind all the mock-bureaucratic chaos is a real goal: raising money for local kids in Wilmington this summer through the Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina. The Stop Summer Hunger Food Drive is a partnership between Sunrise Broadcasting and Bob King Buick GMC, and every dollar donated goes directly toward making sure kids don’t go hungry when school’s out.
Shallotte: the cartoon sun is watching. And waiting.
