Absolutely. Accurate? One hundred percent. If you’ve spent any time here, you know exactly what they’re talking about.
And here’s the thing. People are listening. And they are packing their cars.
Why The Numbers Will Make You Feel Really Good About Your Life Choices
Let’s do the math together. The median home price in San Diego right now is about $975,000, according to Redfin. In Wilmington? Around $479,000. Same coastal lifestyle, same gorgeous weather, half the mortgage payment. You’re welcome.
It’s not just Islands.com either. U.S. News and World Report has Wilmington in its top 250 Best Places to Live in America. Livability.com named us one of the best places to live in 2026. Niche consistently ranks the area at the top of North Carolina’s retirement lists. Publication after publication keeps landing on the same conclusion: Wilmington, NC is one of the best places to live on the East Coast.
Here’s the Part That Might Surprise You
Between July 2024 and July 2025, the Wilmington metro area added more than 12,000 new residents, a 2.6% growth rate that ranked seventh in the entire country among all U.S. metro areas, according to WilmingtonBiz. Not seventh in North Carolina. Seventh in the United States.
People are moving here from everywhere. The Northeast. The Midwest. California, where the cost of living has made retirement feel completely out of reach for a lot of middle-class families. And North Carolina doesn’t make it hard to choose us over the alternatives. The state doesn’t tax Social Security income or military retirement benefits. There’s no estate tax, no inheritance tax. For anyone trying to make fixed-income dollars stretch, that’s a big deal.
Why Wilmington NC Is a Great Place to Live
Three beaches within 30 minutes of downtown. Winters that average between 46 and 55 degrees. The cleanest air in the state. A Riverwalk that has been called America’s best. A cost of living that beats most comparable coastal cities.
Wrightsville Beach for kayaking and paddleboards and that restaurant you take every out-of-town guest to. Carolina Beach for the boardwalk and the kind of summer nostalgia you can’t manufacture. Kure Beach for the kind of quiet that people actually drive four hours to find.
The Gary Shell Cross City Trail winding through 15 miles of parks. Summer concerts at Airlie Gardens. The Battleship. Thalian Hall, one of the oldest working theaters in the whole country.
